“You knew the rules,” Osk said, and turned his dark gaze on Gray. “You, I warned. You knew the consequences for upsetting the order of things.”

The truth of it made fear burn like acid in Gray’s chest, and he couldn’t keep from cringing. Beside him, Vale stood tall and proud, unfazed by Osk’s threats.

“We knew,” Vale said. “We accept the consequences.”

Gray opened his mouth to protest; Vale had no idea what he was talking about. It was too late, though. Osk raised his hands and spoke the curse that would bind them — and separate them — for a lifetime.
