[fox reads] Real Men Work in the Pits by Jeff Hammond

Fox ReadsJeff Hammond is now a TV commentator for NASCAR racing, but he used to be crew chief for some of NASCAR’s most successful drivers. Real Men Work in the Pits [Amazon|Barnes&Noble] covers Hammond’s career from his time in the pits for Cale Yarborough to working as Darrell Waltrip’s crew chief and beyond.

For someone interested in the social interactions between people on the pit crew, this book was fascinating. Reading about how Hammond and Waltrip’s relationship developed, how various team owners and drivers worked with their crews, and how job descriptions change based on which team you work for was very useful.

On top of that, it was an easy and enjoyable read, and Hammond’s insight into the development of NASCAR as an organization was entertaining and educational.
